Twenty-one is the number of completion of the Great Path, for it is exactly how many Major Arcana lead the Fool from innocence to the cosmic consciousness of the World. In Valentinian cosmology, twenty-one corresponds to the aeons of the Pleroma in their interaction: not just static divine principles, but living syzygies – sacred pairs that give birth to each other in the endless dance of creation. The esoteric structure of the Romany spread reflects the threefold-seven matrix of being. The first seven cards form the past – the root of fate, what the Gnostics called heimarmene, the cosmic destiny woven by the archons into the fabric of matter. This is not just events that happened, but karma in the Sanskrit sense: sanskara, imprints in consciousness that continue to shape reality. These seven positions correspond to the seven planetary spheres in their descensus – the soul's descent from Saturn (the most ancient past, the root of the lineage) through Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury to the Moon (the recent past still echoing in the present). Here ancestral programs are read, karmic knots, what alchemists called prima materia – the primary matter of experience requiring transformation. The second seven cards reveal the present in all its multidimensionality – not as a flat moment, but as a spherical space where numerous possibilities intersect. This corresponds to the Valentinian Kenoma – the intermediate world between the Pleroma and Hyle, where the soul has freedom of choice. The central card of this triad (the eleventh overall) is the heart of the entire spread – axis mundi, the axis of the world, the point where the vertical of spirit crosses the horizontal of fate. Hermeticists call this punctum fixum – the fixed point around which the Wheel of Fortune turns. It is here, in the very center of the present moment, that a person has the greatest power over their reality. The last seven cards extend into the future as seven possible trajectories – not one linear fate, but a fan of potentialities. This corresponds to ascensus – the soul's ascent back to the Pleroma, but now enriched by the experience of matter. Each of these cards shows one of the seven heavenly spheres in ascending order: from the Moon (nearest future) through Mercury, Venus, Sun, Mars, Jupiter to Saturn (distant future, final result). But unlike the descent, this ascent is not fatal – the soul, having passed through the gnosis of the central point, can now consciously interact with the planetary forces, not obeying them blindly, but cooperating as equal with equals.

The Romany spread requires special preparation and time – it is not a quick reading, but a true ritual of contemplating fate. Create a sacred space: lay out a colorful scarf (traditionally red or purple), light a candle, perhaps burn incense. Romani fortune-tellers always worked at the boundary of worlds, in the evening or early twilight hour, when the veil between realities is thinnest. The question must be fundamental – not about trifles, but about the great arcs of fate: life path, the fate of relationships, career trajectory, spiritual evolution. This is a spread for those moments when you need to see the full picture, the whole panorama from beginning to end. When laying out twenty-one cards, move slowly and consciously. Place the first seven horizontally from left to right – this is the foundation, the root of everything. Feel the weight of the past, but without judgment or regret – simply acknowledging what is. Lay the second seven in the middle, perhaps slightly higher – this is the living present, the pulsating heart of the situation. Pay special attention to the eleventh card in the very center – it is the key to the whole spread, the point of greatest power. Place the last seven on the right or above – these are the wings of the possible, the fan of a future not yet folded into concrete form. When reading the spread, do not rush from card to card. Let each position resonate, then begin to see the connections: how the first card (root of the past) echoes in the eighth (beginning of the present) and the fifteenth (perspective of the future). How the fourth (center of the past), eleventh (center of the present), and eighteenth (center of the future) form the central axis of fate.
